Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has only been in Congress for a week, and her campaign was just slapped with a serious fine.
According to New York Daily News, her campaign was fined on Thursday by the state of New York for not carrying workers’ compensation insurance for a month while she ran for office last year.
“The employer did not have the required workers’ compensation coverage from March 31, 2018, to April 30, 2018, and was issued a final penalty of $1,500, which was paid,” state Workers Compensation Board spokeswoman Melissa Stewart said.
“This coverage is vital to ensuring workers are protected for on-the-job injuries,” Stewart added.
One Democratic campaign veteran admitted that “it’s not a great look” for Ocasio-Cortez that her campaign was slapped with a fine for not carrying workers’ compensation coverage.
“This is basic stuff, especially if you hold yourself out to be the champion of workers,” the Democrat said.
A State Republican also slammed Ocasio-Cortez for being a total hypocrite on the issue.
“Hypocrisy at its finest,” said state GOP spokeswoman Jessica Proud. “The so-called champion of workers, when given her own responsibility, is not following the law. It’s unbelievable.”
News of Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign being slapped with a serious fine comes after she went absolutely crazy on Tuesday night while delivering a response to President Donald Trump’s address to the nation on border security.
While speaking with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, Ocasio-Cortez trashed the agents who works for Immigration and Customs Enforcement as “human rights” violators just days after she voted in Congress to continue funding the agency.
The 29-year-old socialist launched into an insane rant and accused ICE agents of committing human rights violations.
“The one thing the president has not talked about is the fact he has systematically engaged in the violation of human rights on our border. He has separated children from their families. He talked about what happened the day after Christmas, on the day of Christmas, a child died in ICE custody. The president should not be asking for more money to an agency that has systematically violated human rights,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
She added: “The president should be really defending why we are funding such an agency when right now what we are seeing is death. Right now what we are seeing is the violation of human rights. These children and families are being held in basically freezing boxes that no person should be maintained in for any amount of time let alone the amount of time they are being kept.”
Later in the interview, she claimed illegal aliens trying to enter the U.S. “are acting more in an American tradition” than Trump.
She also claimed Trump’s immigration policies, which a new poll found that a vast majority of Americans support, are “anti-American” and causing “death.”
“This is systematic. It is wrong and it is anti-American. And again, those women and children trying to come here with nothing but the shirts on their back to create an opportunity and provide for this nation are acting more in an American tradition than this president is right now,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“The president should not be asking for more money to an agency that has systematically violated human rights,” she added. “The president should be really defending why we are funding such an agency at all, because right now, what we are seeing is death. Right now what we are seeing is the violation of human rights.”
Her first week in Congress has been an absolute disaster.
