White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders ruined Democrats day on Sunday and argued that lawmakers are not “smart enough” to understand President Donald Trump’s tax returns.
During an interview on Fox News, Sanders stopped host Chris Wallace on the spot when he tried to grill her about the latest effort from Democrats to obtain six years worth of Trump’s personal tax returns.
Sanders called the Democrats plan a “dangerous, dangerous road” and warned that this is nothing more than an attempt to publicly attack the president.
Here’s her full remarks, where she delivered several scorching comments:
“One of the biggest things that I think people aren’t seeing is the fact that the only reason that the Oversight Committee has the ability to request someone’s taxes are for the purpose of determining policy. This has nothing to do with whether or not they are going to determine policy. This is all about political partisanship. This is a dangerous, dangerous road, and frankly, Chris, I don’t think Congress, particularly not this group of congressmen and women, are smart enough to look through the thousands of pages that I would assume that President Trump’s taxes will be.”
“My guess is most of them don’t do their own taxes and I certainly don’t trust them to look through the decades of success that the president has and determine anything. He has filled out hundreds of pages in a financial disclosure form and I think it is a disgusting overreach that they are making when they’re not doing this based on policy. And it puts every American who has filled out tax forms in the past, it puts them all at jeopardy. If they can single one, they can single out everybody.”
Here’s what Fox News reported on the latest effort from Democrats to get Trump’s tax returns:
The request Wednesday by Massachusetts Rep. Richard Neal, who heads the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, was the first such demand for a sitting president’s tax information in 45 years. The move set up a virtually certain legal showdown with the White House.
Neal made the request in a letter to IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig, asking for Trump’s personal and business returns for 2013 through 2018. Neal told Rettig that Democrats have a duty “to ensure that the Internal Revenue Service is enforcing the laws in a fair and impartial manner.”
“It is critical to ensure the accountability of our government and elected officials,” Neal said in a statement. “To maintain trust in our democracy, the American people must be assured that their government is operating properly, as laws intend.”
Neal specifically demanded the federal income tax returns from eight entities, including Trump National Golf Club-Bedminster, as well as statements specifying whether the returns were ever under audit. Neal also demanded all administrative files, including affidavits, related to each return.
This is just more obstruction by the Left, but Sanders is refusing to back down.
Now that their “Russian collusion” pipe dream has failed, they are onto their next witch hunt to go after the president.
