The former Border Patrol Chief under President Barack Obama sounded off about the border wall and revealed the only reason why Democrats oppose it.
During an interview Monday on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” former CBP Chief Mark Morgan said Democrats are only opposing President Donald Trump’s border wall for political reasons.
Morgan not only said walls “absolutely work,” he added that he fully supports Trump’s quest to get the wall along the southern border between the United States and Mexico.
“I cannot think of a legitimate argument why anyone would not support the wall as part of a multi-layered border security issue,” he added.
Morgan said Trump is correct in calling the issues at the border a national security problem, saying border security professionals absolutely agree with the president on this issue.
“Why aren’t we listening to the experts and the people who do it every day? I don’t understand that,” he said.
Part of the federal government has been shutdown for just shy of three weeks.
Last month, House Republicans voted 217-185 to approve a measure that would keep the government open and allocate $5.7 billion for border wall funding.
The bill is now waiting a full vote in the Senate, where lawmakers are hashing it out over funding for border security.
Trump originally wanted $5 billion for border wall funding and Democrats only offered $1.6 billion, which they claimed was a “very generous” offer.
To further make his case, Trump will deliver a televised speech to the nation from the Oval Office on Tuesday night to address the issue directly with the American people.
It also appears that Trump has far more leverage than Democrats.
The first immigration poll of 2019 also signals that a majority of Americans agree with the president on the issue of securing the border.
According to a new Economist/YouGov survey, 93 percent of Americans say illegal immigration is a problem.
The poll found that just 7 percent of the overall public say illegal immigration is “not a problem” facing the nation.
Trump has been determined to get at least $5 billion in funding for the wall amid the government shutdown.
The president has also threatened to declare a national emergency and have the military build his wall, which would use funds from the Department of Defense.
In fact, House Armed Service Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Smith, D-WA, admitted over the weekend that Trump has the full authority to use the U.S. military to build the border wall.
Trump’s Oval Office address to the nation will be carried live on all networks on Tuesday night at 9 p.m. ET.
