MSNBC’s Katy Tur freaked out over the weekend and claimed that “millions and millions of people will die” without Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal.
During a panel discussion on MSNBC with host Chuck Todd, the group began discussing Ocasio-Cortez’s socialist legislation, which was just released last Thursday.
“I’m not so sure about that. I think you have some real reporting out there from experts not just analysts on television, but from actual experts at the U.N., from Donald Trump’s own administration saying how dire this is,” Tur said.
“The U.N. said we have 12 years before complete disaster. Talk to the representative of the Marshall Islands and he’s calling it what could amount to genocide if we allow things to go as they are. The reports aren’t just hey, it’s going to get bad. The reports are people will die. Millions and millions of people will die,” she added.
Tur continued,”I think that there’s an appetite among voters out there, especially Democratic voters and potentially swing voters to say, let’s do something about this now because it’s going to affect our future and there’s real economic damage that can happen as well. Billions of dollars in economic damage from crops, to deaths, to losing ocean front homes and businesses in — over the next century.”
Kimberly Atkins, senior Washington reporter for radio station WBUR, follow-up Tur’s doom-and-gloom prediction by arguing that it was “brilliant” of Ocasio-Cortez to not mention the details of how to implement the Green New Deal.
“And I think that is an issue that moves and I think the aspirational aspect of this; I think it was pretty brilliant to not to put in a bunch of details that people can immediately start taking down,” Atkins said.
In other words, Atkins said it was brilliant for Ocasio-Cortez to release an insanely vague measure because people couldn’t see the full absurdity of it.
The core of the Green New Deal is to require the U.S. to eliminate “pollution and greenhouse gas emissions” and meet “100 percent of the power demand in the United States through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources” within 10 years.
The legislation also calls for every single building in the United States to be “upgraded or replaced,” meaning taxpayers will be stuck footing that massive bill.
Not missing the chance to peddle liberal talking points, the bill actually argues that climate change has “exacerbated systemic racial … injustices” as well as other inequalities.
The legislation goes on to argue that its goal is to secure “community resiliency” and “repairing historic oppression” of almost every class of victims the authors can imagine.
Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal also promised to provide “free” healthcare, education, and even jobs, including to those who are “unwilling to work.”
However, taxpayers will be stuck footing the bill, which comes out to $7 trillion.
Other studies have found that it could actually cost nearly $50 trillion, which would be roughly seven — SEVEN — times more than that.
