ABC’s “The View” co-host Joy Behar defended the Saturday Night Live cast member who mocked a wounded veteran, saying, “nothing I won’t joke about.”
During a segment on Monday, the panel began discussing the controversy surrounding SNL’s Pete Davidson, who mocked a disabled veteran who also happens to be a Republican running for office in the midterm elections.
While some of the liberal hosts on “The View” took issue with Davidson’s disgusting comments, Behar repeatedly defended the show and Davidson, saying it was “normal” and “common” for comedians to make “offensive jokes.”
After playing a clip of Davidson’s skit and comments, co-host Whoopi Goldberg asked the panel if he should apologize.
Behar pounced on the question and got the first word in:
Saturday Night Live doesn’t take any prisoners. They’ve been on the air for like, what, 40, 50 years now? They took a shot at Alec Baldwin who’s part of their family, so they go after a lot of people. And this kid Davidson, his father died in 9/11, and he said, ‘I like making things that — I like making things out of dark, awkward, weird things that you don’t really find funny, funny. There’s nothing I won’t joke about and I think it’s because of what happened to me.’ So he’s coming from a place of — you know, you make fun of things that are so painful to lighten the load. That’s where he’s coming from.
Co-hosts Abby Huntsman and Meghan McCain, the lone conservatives on the show, quickly jumped in and slammed Davidson.
Huntsman called it “tone-deaf,” and criticized the entire SNL team for writing the joke and rehearing it without thinking twice about how grotesque it was.
McCain had more forceful response, and called out the clear double-standard with how Crenshaw, like many Republicans, are endlessly smeared with disgusting and personal jokes by liberal comedians.
I will say that if it were Tammy Duckworth who is also a hero as well and a veteran of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, if someone had been making fun of her, I don’t know if we would have the same reaction. I don’t know if it’s because he’s a Republican, but the response was, ‘conservatives are angry.’
Liberal co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Whoopi also suggested that Davidson apologize, but Behar likened the remark to “free speech.”
While Behar’s comments on Monday were downright bizarre and disgusting, this is hardly the first time she’s come under fire.
She also disgustingly said “God forbid” Trump lives for another 20 years and asked why Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wasn’t thrown in jail for blocking former President Barack Obama’s nominee for the Supreme court in 2016.
She also come under fire earlier this year and was forced to issue an apology after she said Vice President Mike Pence had a “mental illness” because he is a devout Christian.
