Sen. Bernie Sanders issued a disgusting two-word response on Thursday when asked if he has anything to say about Democratic National Committee Co-Chair Rep. Keith Ellison being accused by two women of sexual abuse.
“Nope, nothing,” Sanders told The Washington Post. “You’ll excuse me, I’ve got to get going.”
On Tuesday, Ellison easily won Minnesota’s primary to become the state’s next attorney general. With the DNC offering a flimsy statement saying it is “reviewing” the allegations and Sanders being one of his top allies, it appears the Democratic Party isn’t prepared to hold Ellison to the same standard as others who have been accused of similar behavior.
Since last Saturday, he has been accused of physical and emotional abuse by two women he was reportedly previously dating – Karen Monahan and Amy Alexander.
Democratic Sens. Kamala Harris of California and Claire McCaskill of Missouri also gave the Post shoddy answers when asked about the allegations made against Ellison.
“I know that the DNC is investigating it, so we’ll see and let that run its course,” Harris said. “I think that’s appropriate to look into it,” McCaskill said.
The allegations against Ellison are very serious, and Sanders refusing to offer any response other than “nope, nothing” is downright disgusting.
Last Saturday, Monohan’s son, Austin, claimed in a viral Facebook post that he saw a video of Ellison dragging his mother off a bed and yelling expletives at her. Austin has not made the video public that he claims to have and Ellison has claimed that it does not exist.
Here’s what he wrote, in part, in the Facebook post:
“I was using my moms computer trying to download something and I clicked on a file, I found over 100 text and twitters messages and video almost 2 min long that showed Keith Ellison dragging my mama off the bed by her feet, screaming and calling her a ‘f**king b*tch’ and telling her to get the fuck out of his house.”
On Tuesday, a few days after Austin’s post went viral on Facebook and on the same day that Ellison won Minnesota’s AG primary, Alexander accused the congressman of grabbing and threatening her. Alexander, an alleged former girlfriend, claims she had an on-and-off romantic relationship with Ellison between the early 1990s and 2004.
“I succumbed to his romantic advances. In retrospect, this was one of the greatest mistakes of my life. Our hot and cold romance devolved into a love/ hate showdown by spring of 1994. Keith belittled me about my weight and constantly criticized my every word and action. He ostracized me from the community,” Alexander wrote in an op-ed for the Wright County Republican.
Alexander claims Ellison allegedly went to her house, grabbed her, verbally abused her, and threatened her in 2005. Ellison denied the allegations at the time and again this week when asked about it. He has also denied ever having a relationship with Alexander.
Time will tell what happens next regarding the serious allegations against Ellison, but Sanders literally having nothing to say about it will not sit well with many Americans.
