Trump to Guam: We are with You 1,000 Percent

“As the governor of Guam, I have never felt more safe or as confident with you at the helm,” Guam’s governor, Eddie Baza Calvo, said.

President Trump called Guam’s governor Friday night to assure him the U.S. will protect its Pacific Island territory “1,000 percent” from North Korean aggression.

Washington Examiner reported Friday night:

Guam‘s governor, Eddie Baza Calvo, posted a video to Facebook in which he has a more-than-three-minute phone conversation with Trump, heard on speakerphone.

“I just wanted to pay my respects and we are with you 1,000 percent,” Trump said in the opening of the call, which came to Calvo on Saturday morning local time. “You are safe. And I wanted to call you and say hello. How are you?”

Calvo, a Republican, went on to express comfort in Trump’s leadership, and empathy towards the president for the criticism he has received after threatening to impose “fire and fury” on North Korea for its nuclear weapons program.

“As the governor of Guam, I have never felt more safe or as confident with you at the helm,” Calvo said. “So with all the criticism that’s going on over there, from a guy that’s being targeted, we need a president like you.”

Trump joked that Calvo has become “extremely famous” from recent news coverage of Guam, a U.S. island territory of 160,000 people in the western Pacific Ocean that hosts American military bases.

After Trump threatened Pyongyang, the North Korean military asserted it will complete its plan to attack “waters near Guam” by mid-August.

Trump and Calvo tried to play down the threat. Calvo even invited Trump to visit Guam, to which the president replied “that could happen.”

“All over the world they are talking about Guam and they are talking about you,” Trump told the governor. “I can say this: your tourism [is] going to go up like tenfold.””
