New York Democratic Rep-Elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wants a seat on the powerful House Financial Services Committee.
While speaking with HillTV, the 29-year-old socialist is already aiming to be part of the top committee that oversees the country’s financial sector.
“I think with our district, we can be ambitious, so we’re kind of swinging for the fences on committees,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “We might as well ask for something big.”
The Hill reported:
The Financial Services panel is one of the most sought-after House committees. Its members wield significant influence over Washington’s relationship with Wall Street, and the panel offers access to millions of dollars in financial sector campaign donations.
The committee is also is expected to lead several investigations into President Trump’s personal finances, along with potential connections between his businesses and Russian oligarchs.
Joining the Financial Services panel would give Ocasio-Cortez, a self-described socialist who wants to hike taxes and expand the government, power to allocate funding for many of her ideas.
On Friday, Ocasio-Cortez compared her election victory to “establishing civil rights” and the United States landing on the moon.
“We’ve done it. We’ve dug deep and we’ve done what we thought was impossible. We went to the moon, we electrified the nation. We established civil rights, we enfranchised the country. We dig deep and we did it,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“We did it when no one else thought that we could. That’s what we did when so many of us won an election this year,” she said to silence from the crowd.
She then launched into a desperate plea for people to support the “Green Jobs For All” plan and said “people will die” if climate change is not addressed.
“This is about the fact that if we continue to allow power to dictate the quality of our air and water, people will die.”
On Thursday, the young Democrat said she feels like an “American revolutionary.”
Last week, she said “people are going to die” if her “Green New Deal” is not passed in Congress, which many have argued is nothing more than a Trojan Horse for the implementation of full-blown socialism in America.
“People are going to die if we don’t start addressing climate change ASAP”
“It’s not enough to think it’s ‘important.’ We must make it urgent. That’s why we need a Select Committee on a Green New Deal, & why fossil fuel-funded officials shouldn’t be writing climate change policy.”
Ocasio-Cortez also recently found herself in hot water after she compared the migrant caravan swarming the U.S. border to Jews fleeing Nazi Germany during the Holocaust.
She had also struggled mightily to explain how to pay for the $218 trillion “Medicare for all” plan she supports, said it was a “no brainer” that President Trump should be impeached, and is in favor of eliminating the Electoral College.
