President Donald Trump met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi at the White House on Tuesday, and things got intense.
While the reporters were still in the room, Trump ripped Pelosi and Schumer over border wall funding and shut them down when they suggested the American people didn’t want the wall.
Pelosi and Trump started by arguing over whether the president had the votes in the House of Representatives to pass a bill that included border wall funding.
Trump continued to push ahead while Pelosi was literally begging the president not to discuss his demands in front of the press.
When Trump threatened to shut down the government over funding for the border wall, Pelosi responded: “You will not win.”
“Elections have consequences, Mr. President,” Schumer said.
Trump shot back: “That’s right. And that’s why the country is doing so well.”
When Schumer claimed that a wall “doesn’t solve the problem” of border security, Trump fired back again: “it totally solves the problem” before embarking noting the successes of combating illegal crossing in southern California and over in Israel.
At one point, Trump looked Schumer in the face and told him that he’d be proud to shut down the government.
“I am proud to shut down the government for border security Chuck because the people of this country…don’t want criminals pouring into our country. I will take the blame for it because last time you shut it down it didn’t work,” Trump said.
