House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had a congressional delegation (CODEL) trip cancelled after President Donald Trump stopped her trip amid the government shutdown, suggesting that she be home to negotiate.
She was about to use military aircraft to travel and according to multiple sources such as the Daily Caller and Judicial Watch, this wouldn’t have been the first time that Pelosi has used military aircraft for her travels.
After her trip overseas to Belgium, Afghanistan, and Egypt was recently cancelled, people dug into her travel history a big further. It was discovered that Pelosi is a big spender when it comes to travel.
In fact, she cost the United States Air Force almost $200,000 back in 2015 when she took a trip to the Ukraine and Italy.
Thanks to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit by Judicial Watch, they revealed that she “cost the Air Force $184,587.81, according to documents released Saturday under a 2015 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit by Judicial Watch.
Her delegation was made up of other Democratic members of Congress, including California Rep. Anna Eshoo, after “token” Republican Wisconsin Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner pulled out last-minute, reported The Washington Post in 2015.
That’s an extremely expensive overseas trip for anyone. But is it just Nancy Pelosi traveling or does she take family members on work trips? It seems like she certainly doesn’t travel alone, but who foots the bill for people who don’t work for the government?
You might be wondering about that as much as the next person!
Based on the report by the Daily Caller, “four family members, including Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi, were slated to go on the trip.
The delegation was scheduled to dine at restaurants including James Beard American Restaurant in Milan, where a five-course meal cost up to $190, according to Fine Dining Lovers.
The lawmakers also toured the Vatican and met up with Italian dignitaries, including President Sergio Mattarella and then-Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, according to their itinerary.”
That’s interesting. She was taking tours and blowing wads of government money on overpriced meals. To top it off, her team reportedly had very detailed requests for the officials of the Air Force who were tasked with trip coordination.
Just imagine what could be purchased with over $184,000! College tuition for several people, cars for the whole family, a new home, or maybe thousands of bricks for the Trump wall!
It gets better. Pelosi has been reportedly called out for abusing her travel perks dating back to 2009, according to Judicial Watch.
Further quoted, “beginning in 2009, after the media failed to follow-up on concerns raised about Nancy Pelosi’s use of luxury Air Force jets to travel between her congressional district and DC, Judicial Watch’s Freedom of Information act requests exposed her abuse of this travel perk. Judicial Watch uncovered that Pelosi’s military travel cost the United States Air Force $2,100,744.59 over one two-year period — $101,429.14 of which was for in-flight expenses, including food and alcohol.”
Most people planning a trip can probably find a much more efficient way to spend government money. If someone spends almost $200,000 on a trip, then most would consider that to be a bit much.
How much extra can she spend (waste)?
Perhaps we find out, or maybe she starts spending our government money a little more responsibly.
