President Donald Trump torched Democrats over their refusal to strike a deal on border security, saying they “don’t give a damn” about stopping crime and gang members.
While taking questions from reporters on Thursday outside of the White House before making a trip to Texas to visit the border, Trump slammed Democrats and said he was considering declaring a national emergency over border security if he does not get funding for a wall.
“There is no reason we can’t come to a deal but we have another side that doesn’t care about border security,” Trump said.
“The Democrats, which I’ve been saying all along, they don’t give a damn about crime. They don’t care about gang members coming in and stabbing people and cutting people up,” he added.
Trump will be visiting the southern border on Thursday afternoon and speaking with federal immigration officials about the situation.
The president excoriating Democrats comes one day after congressional leaders met at the White House with Trump to discuss the partial government shutdown.
Soon after the meeting was over, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer ran to the cameras outside of the White House and said Trump walked out of the meeting after Democrats told him “no” on striking a deal to provide funding for the border wall.
“Well, unfortunately, the president just got up and walked out,” Schumer said.
Schumer said after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said “no” when asked about funding the wall, Trump said “bye bye” and left the meeting.
“And he just got up and said, ‘We have nothing to discuss,’ and he just walked out,” Schumer said.
Soon after the meeting, Trump seemed to confirm that he walked out of the meeting and that it was a total waste of time.
Just left a meeting with Chuck and Nancy, a total waste of time. I asked what is going to happen in 30 days if I quickly open things up, are you going to approve Border Security which includes a Wall or Steel Barrier? Nancy said, NO. I said bye-bye, nothing else works!

On Tuesday night, Trump delivered a national address from the Oval Office to urge Democrats to accept a funding bill that will allocate funding for the border wall.
Polling strongly suggests the American people are with Trump on the issue of combating illegal immigration and securing the border.
According to a new Economist/YouGov survey, 93 percent of Americans say illegal immigration is a problem.
The poll found that just 7 percent of the overall public say illegal immigration is “not a problem” facing the nation.
Trump has been determined to get at least $5 billion in funding for the wall amid the government shutdown.
Trump has threatened to declare a national emergency and have the military build his wall, which would use funds from the Department of Defense.
House Armed Service Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Smith, D-WA, stunned many over the weekend and admitted that Trump has the full authority to use the U.S. military to build the border wall.
